The Problem Goterra aims to scale up operations and improve efficiency in maggot operations for increased production. We assited Goterra in enhancing manual process and simplifying the database input system. Currently, the team relies on Google Sheets to monitor maggot data, which is both challenging to manage and burdensome to navigate. Our task was to identify workflow issues and design a solution that streamlines data input. Goterra's expansion plans depend on achieving higher production levels with improved efficiency and accuracy in maggot operations.
The Process In the project, contextual inquiry was vital as it allowed us to observe the breeding and feeding process of maggots, gaining valuable insights. We investigated why Goterra didn't use an existing data input platform and decided a personalized system would be more suitable after consulting their software engineer. Analyzing the data involved understanding complex steps, including mathematical formulas. User task flows helped map the production team's processes, highlighting manual data recording on paper. We prioritized eliminating this practice. To address the root problem, we identified three key elements for the MVP: 01. Step-by-step data input system to guide and reduce errors. 02. Continuous temperature and humidity data for maggots' well-being. 03. Dashboards for production summaries and daily requirements. These elements aimed to simplify the process effectively as well as reducing mistakes made while takeing physical notes.
The Outcome The solution provided is a custom web dashboard tailored to meet the requirements of the production team and align with Goterra's present and future business objectives. The web app features a user-friendly interface that is divided into distinct sections representing various stages of the maggot lifecycle. It offers the convenience of switching between data entry and data visualization, making the process of inputting data straightforward. After three rounds of testing and refining, we delivered a high-fidelity Figma prototype, ensuring a polished and refined user experience.
